Hey Dr Sue — What Are The New Technologies Looking Like For More Easy-To-Use TRT?
For anyone not familiar with the term, TRT is Testosterone Replacement Therapy. It’s often prescribed for people who’ve been diagnosed with low testosterone, commonly called low T. Although, there are other reasons why someone may be on TRT, including hypogonadism. For trans folks, being prescribed testosterone is usually referred to as testosterone therapy.
Currently there are several ways to take testosterone including injections, pills, gels, implants, and patches. Given these options, there’s not much research being done on new delivery methods.
What does the future of TRT look like? There are some studies looking at different dosing levels and schedules, but that’s still using the delivery methods that currently exist.
The newest technology in this area is focusing on how to get the body to start producing more testosterone on its own. One way is by using stem cells to create testosterone producing cells. But that research is still in the early stages, and assuming it passes FDA approval, it still won’t be on the market anytime soon.
