Hey Dr Sue — Keeping with the Utah theme this week on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (RHOSLC) Heather says it’s her “dream to be ravaged by Sasquatch”. I’m not going to ask you if that’s a thing and I’m not googling it because I don’t want that in my history!
What I will ask you is how do these fetishes form? How do you get to a place where you’re checking out the mascot at the football game and you find yourself thinking “Ooooh I want to hit that”?
And are fetishes healthy?
BTW — side note — in the same episode Mary claims that carbonated water hardens your ovaries. I’m pretty sure that’s not true but I can’t google because it will make Mary mad and she WILL send Jesus for me and I just don’t need that right now.
Let’s clean up the language a bit first.
There is an actual fetish disorder diagnosis in the DSM. It’s when someone needs a non-sexual body part or other inanimate object to get aroused — like feet, or shoes, or maybe a specific material like leather or lace.
For something to meet the criteria of a fetish that object MUST either be present, or the person must be thinking about it, in order to get turned on. And, in order to be an actual diagnosable fetish, the person needs to be having a negative…
